The red room was never the same, it shapeshifted accordingly to whom was inside. The stomach of Hill House, it would digest anyone who was inside. I see it has grief and trauma, feelings that lock us inside ourselves, eating us whole.

This is the key to exit the red room. To hope, innocence, forgiveness. To unlock grief and trauma. To be free.

To stop haunting ourselves over and over again, in a loop. Like a serpent eating its tail. Break the cycle.

I always loved keys since I was a child, I used to use a key as a necklace when I was teen. When I was taking my bachelors a friend of mine gave me a small silver key pendant as a souvenir from the UK. Keys have always been a symbol I’ve felt drawn to, I’ve always seen it as powerful symbol of independence and clarity.

I’ve been thinking about doing a key for a long time and in February I felt a strong urge to finally do it, after designing the cup of stars. I remembered the red room… it made sense to do a small replica of the skeleton key of Hill House, and to make both the key and cup happen at the same time.
